Here is the letter I sent to friends in December 2007.
It is a brief travelogue in disguise!

Dear friends, Christmas blessings and Happy New Year to you all.

This has been a very different year for me as I have recently been to Israel, the Holy Land, with son Greg, for a 10 day tour. It was the highlight of our lives to date! Much more than a vacation or sightseeing trip, it was an experience! Not only of seeing and touching places where the Old and New Testaments took place, but seeing and touching the places where the end of worldly history and the beginning of eternity future will occur, both in the Valley of Megiddo and in Jerusalem. Mind you, I have been reading volumes about Israel and the Jewish people and studying God’s purposes through and for them for many years. So this trip was a fulfillment of dreams, both for me and for Greg.

Among the highlights were: a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, dinner in ‘Abraham’s tent’, a swim, or rather float, in the Dead Sea, a walk through the Garden of Gethsemane where some of the olive trees present when Jesus prayed there are still alive and bearing olives, a cable car ride to the top of Masada, the last holdout of the Jewish zealots in 73 A.D. where they and their families lived for 3 years, inapproachable by the Romans until they succeeded in building a ramp to mount and kill them, but the Jews bravely committed mass suicide the night before to avoid being raped and enslaved by their enemies. This was a very moving experience, walking about on top of this 1300 foot high flat topped mountain. Also, we visited the Old City of Jerusalem, prayed at the Western (formerly Wailing) Wall, walked in the excavated rabbinical tunnels surrounding the Temple Mount, came within feet of where the Holy of Holies existed when the first and second Temples were there (and will be again). We entered what could very likely be the tomb where Jesus was buried for 3 days before He rose from the dead, another very moving experience. We visited Bet She’an, part of an ancient Roman city which has been excavated by archeologists – amazing! We went to Nazareth and Bethlehem, Capernaum, Tiberias, the Mount of the Beatitudes where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, the Holocaust Museum, and so many more emotionally laden sites.

Three of our fellow tourists were pastors and blessed us at many of the sites by reading the pertinent scriptures and giving brief devotionals for us to ponder. Our guide was a native Israeli who had great knowledge of Israel’s history, government, and of the Zionist persuasion, believing that Israel is entitled to all the land God promised would be theirs forever, from the Red Sea to the River Euphrates.

The most relevant factor in our desire to go there was and is the fact that prophecy regarding Israel is being fulfilled in our lifetime! The miraculous rebirth of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948, the return of over 3 million Jews from every corner of the earth from their former dispersion by God, the resurrection of the Hebrew language, the blooming of the desert, all are miraculous events prophesied in many Old and New Testament scriptures. And we saw it with our own eyes. We look forward to the ultimate playing out of history future which will culminate in the salvation of a remnant of Israel, the return of Messiah Jesus and the restoration of the earth to its original condition before the fall of Satan and of man. And it all takes place in ‘the Land’ (ha Eretz) of Israel. Will you please ‘pray for the peace of Jerusalem’ (Psalms 122:6) since this is the prayer which brings Messiah back to the earth.

Note: This trip was the “Best Of Israel 10 Day Tour” by Pilgrim Tours Click on “Israel Travel” at the top of this blog to see many photos of my two trips to Israel!

Also, ‘Aliyah’ doesn’t only mean immigrating to Israel; it also means ‘going up’ to Jerusalem, which I have done twice!

  1. Elena! I remember this when you first posted it. Thank you for linking it once again. Carol
